Fernell Miller (she/her), CEO, Founder, and Principal of The Root Of Us, is a visionary educator and racial justice advocate with over 40 years of experience. Grounded in restorative practices and inspired by her childhood connection to nature, she empowers individuals and organizations through trauma-informed care, mindfulness, and racial healing, fostering deeper connections with the Earth and marginalized communities.
My Story
Fernell Miller (she/her) CEO, Founder and Principal of The Root Of Us, is a visionary leader, racial justice advocate and educator, whose roots in restorative practices trace back to the loving embrace of a Northern Catalpa tree in her childhood yard. It was there, in her first true friendship, that Fernell discovered the power of connection, creativity, and unconditional love. Those formative moments—grounding herself in nature, breathing deeply, and exploring her independence—laid the foundation for her lifelong journey of healing and empowerment.
Now, with over 40 years of experience as an educator and coach, Fernell brings the wisdom of her early connection to nature into her trauma-informed care practices. Her work centers the transformative power of physical activity, mindfulness, and the lessons the natural world offers about relationships—with ourselves, each other, and the lands and waters we inhabit. She invites individuals and organizations to reflect on how their relationships with the environment mirror their relationships with Indigenous, Black, Brown, and Women communities.
As she transitions from the classroom to leading The Root Of Us, Fernell’s passion is to nurture healing through nature, empowering others to explore and deepen their connection to the Earth and one another. Through her unique blend of storytelling, advocacy, and the grounded practicesin peace and racial healing circles, she inspires communities to rise into their highest selves.
